Scarab Rings
The Scarab was sacred to the Ancient Egyptians
Item Number: SC 014
A very detailed carved Carnelian Scarab in
a well made revolving top ring mount in tested unmarked 18 carat Gold. The reverse of the Scarab is carved with the figure of a
lightly cloaked walking man with a star on the horizon to his front. The
brown/red Carnelian Scarab and Gold mount is an Etruscan Revivalist Ring,
probably made in Rome or Florence in the 19th century for sale to affluent
English tourists. An Etruscan original Ring of this type would have dated to
circa 400 B.C.

A large and vibrant Turquoise Scarab,
well carved and with good detailing on the carapace, legs and head, the
reverse also carved with runes and symbols, none of which can I translate. On the carapace and girdle there is still some of the original
stone in which the piece of precious Turquoise was found embedded and the gem
carver chose to leave this in place. The plain and unmarked early 20th
century ring mount tests as 18 carat Gold and this most attractive and eye
catching Scarab dates from the mid 18th century and was probably
carved in Egypt. Antique Gem Scarabs of this size are not often found and the
last one I owned was about five years ago, which was pre-website!

large Banded Agate Etruscan Revival Scarab Ring.
The reverse of the stone is carved with a bearded striding
male figure, naked except for a cloak and winged helmet, carrying what look
like two spears and with his right arm uplifted and the outer edge of the
stone is engraved with a continuous hatched design which represents the
Ouroboros, the serpent that encircles the universe. The Scarab stone is
mounted across the finger in an ancient style stirrup shaped shank with Gold
wire twist at either side and testing as 18 carat Gold.

A
carved Chrysoprase Scarab in a 10 Kt stamped ring mount. The
reverse of the scarab is lightly carved with lines and crosses which are
meaningless except for paying homage to the ancients. The power of the Scarab
rests with the image itself and anything on the reverse, whether it is a
3,000 year old hieroglyphic prayer or a 1960's squiggle make no difference.
This Scarab, in this wavy Gold 1930's mount has the touch
of a colour of a Russian Emerald about him; and his next owner will be
very pleased when they put him up close to an electric lamp and see the

A
large Blue/Green Glazed faience Scarab, the most highly regarded colour in
Ancient Egypt and dating to Circa 1500 BC and in excellent Condition. The
reverse with Hieroglyphics and much scholarly information which the next owner
can enjoy having translated in the Egyptology department of their local
museum. The 9 ct Gold mount is Fully Hallmarked for Birmingham Date Letter for
1926 and I speculate that this Scarab is one of the thousands of Egyptian
Artifacts that found their way into the United Kingdom by being purchased by
Britons returning from Service in India and the Far East, when their ships
berthed at the Egyptian port of Alexandria after they had been through the
Suez Canal. It was this journey that coined the word Posh. Port Out

A rare
little ring for a small-handed woman. The
revolving top is an ancient turquoise faience scarab with hieroglyphics on the
reverse. I am told that the scarab is New Kingdom (1500 BC) and was probably
excavated in Luxor. The Revivalist
ring mount is of high quality, with immaculate corded Gold wire around the bezel
and wrapped around the shoulders in the manner of thousands of years ago.
Because of the skill involved I suspect that it was made by one of
Castellani’s competitors in Rome around 1880

place in an earlier jewel. Circa 1800

A revolving Gold scarab ring. The heavy
Gold scarab, well modelled and with an Egyptian motif border around the lower
part, which has a hinged locket compartment, suitable for a miniature. The
reverse of the scarab is plain. The rings shoulders are in bound Gold
wire, which merge into the shank in a seamless way. There are two French
Hibou marks on the outer shank which tell me that the Gold is 18ct, French circa
1875

I
do not know the exact age of this mottled Turquoise Scarab other than I will
offer it as mid 19th century in an old English 9ct Gold mount.
There are slight indications of lettering of some kind on the reverse and
the stone has not been drilled. If
it turns out to be Ancient Egyptian or Phoenician then the buyer will be
delighted.
