This is a gorgeous heart shaped Rubellite which is the finest colour of
Red Tourmaline. These beautiful
stones are usually, or should I say rarely, found in the Ruby mines of
Madagascar and are often mistaken for Rubies by the inexperienced.
This delightful example is mounted in 18 carat White Gold and is securely
held in five sets of triple claws and has the most charming gallery
comprising of a series hand cut White Gold Hearts between each support and
dates from the late 1930’s.

Quite
a nice Sapphire in the head of this 2-row Snake Ring and he has a tiny rose
diamond eye and looks sound asleep. Inside the band inscribed in old script,
is a date; December 11th 1876 which probably makes this Snake a 19th Century
engagement ring. Queen Victoria popularised the giving of Snake Rings as
Engagement Rings by wearing a Diamond Set Snake ring designed by her future
husband Prince Albert. The
ring is unmarked, tested as 18 ct Gold and could well become and Engagement
Ring again! English

This pristine and perfect Ring is in fact
over two thousand years old. The only way it could have survived in this
state is if it had been in a buried hoard and only
discovered in the last thirty years or so. It is one of the many Rings I bought after Mrs D went to Heaven and her
large collection was dispersed. This
Ring is most probably Greek and the pointed red stone is a Garnet and it is
surrounded with the most exquisite Gold Grain work, which extends underneath th
e
bezel at the shoulders where no one except the owner would ever see it. At this
early period, Gemstones were either cabochon or pointed, as there was no way of
cutting them. A rare find.
Greek circa 200 B.C.

A Georgian five stone closed back
Almandine Garnet Ring of half hoop design, with innumerable Gold Granulation
surrounding the Gems, which I understand would have been soldered on one bead at
a time. Very skilful work. More granulation on the shoulders to a double
engraved shank.

A
Cabochon Sapphire, Diamond and Platinum ring. The translucent light blue
oval star Sapphire, weighing approximately 4 ½ carats, in a rub over setting
with two similarly set baguette Diamonds on each shoulder. All four
Diamonds of good colour and clarity and a total weight of approximately half a
carat. The Star Sapphire, with an excellent six pointed star and under
electrical light the stone looks a light lilac colour. Very pretty. The
gallery is in a series of triangular cutouts with a plain shank, the inner band
stamped 'PLAT' for Platinum. I am also entering this ring into the Classic
Engagement Ring section, for the girl who wants a Platinum and Gem engagement ring to
wear with her planned platinum wedding ring. English circa 1935.

A Georgian English Sapphire and Diamond three stone ring. The central faceted Sapphire finely claw set, the diamonds also, to a closed back mount. The gem stones have a surround of Gold Canatille work (little Gold balls with a base surround of corded Gold wire). The Gold shank comprising twin rows of Gold wire between which a third line of gold rope twist is inserted. An elegant and skillfully made ring, only appreciated with close examination, as I am doing in order to write this for you. This is the kind of gift that Wordsworth or Byron would have given to their ladies. Circa 1820

Tiffany & Co made this classic engagement ring in 1900 or there about and it was probably made to order and not 'off the shelf'. The center stone is an old mine Brilliant Cut Diamond of good colour and on either side are two demantoid Garnets of the most startling fresh bright green colour imaginable. The shoulders of the ring are engraved with leaves between milligrain edges and there is further engraving along the bottom of the gallery. The Diamond has its own individual Platinum setting. For such a simple concept as a 3 stone ring, this one stands out for sheer attention to detail and quality of craftsmanship. The inner shank signed Tiffany and Co, American circa 1900

This ring is also listed in Ladies Gem Rings
This may well be the only Georgian ring of this design that I will ever have on my website. It is a truly very rare model, totally original and in excellent condition. I feel that it has only been worn at special occasions and has probably been in the same family for over 200 years until it recently came on the open market. The ring comprises three rows of small, plump old cut Diamonds, approximately 39 in all, the central row being the larger. The settings are Silver annealed on Gold, with engraving on the lower edge which continues along the shank which has foliate scrolls and curlesque. All in good condition which is an exception for a ring of this period. The Silver on Gold padlock and key are pave set with numerous rose Diamonds and are suspended from Gold chain connections. What is the meaning of the padlock and key? It is open to several interpretations, all romantic in the 18th Century and still so today and was probably a betrothal or engagement ring. The ring was probably worn with the padlock and key hanging down towards the fingertip, which immediately draws the admiration of others, because with the slightest movement, a pretty twinkle follows.
