A
splendid looking Georgian Diamond Ring,
the triple row of twenty-one Silver set on gold, closed back, Old Mine, Brilliant Cut
Diamonds emitting fire that modern stones can rarely match, the principle reason
because the Diamonds probably originated from the Golconda Mines in India,
exhausted by 1800, which produced Diamonds of such soft light and lustre that
the world had not seen before or since, which makes this Ring the ultimate
candle lit dining experience to appreciate the true beauty of these stones which
excel in the gentlest of illumination. Each shoulder has a simple leaf
design motif between double reeded arms to a similar shank.

mid 17th century Gold and Rock Crystal Ring
The Ring has a square Gold box top setting and is mounted with a table cut Rock Crystal, an important health giving gemstone then and still is to the present day. The Ring has slightly curled shoulders leading to a fluted shank and behind the head is a slightly raised design giving an almost cruciform appearance at first glance.
The
finger size is quite large but if you examine portraits of the period, you will
see that men also used to wear this design Ring, sometimes on the thumb or on
the index finger. English

is to say an original Butterfly Ring of the Belle Époque. This pretty
Swallowtail is set with a four stone Sapphire body and Rose Diamond wings and

outer edge of the shank are two French Gold marks. Behind the body is a
screw devise, which means that it would have originally been retailed in a case
with additional fittings such as a hair comb, pendant, brooch frame, etc.
together with the miniature tool required to change this beautiful jewel into
another creation. This has all been lost, but we still have the most important

fine old square cut Amethyst of rich Royal Purple hue, recycled into a 9ct Gold
mount in 1983, so the hallmark tells me. This
velvety stone was probably in an Art Deco Jewel, subsequently remodelled (it
still happens) and has possibly attended some of the finest balls of the
1920’s. This Amethyst, if remounted in a good design Ring with carefully
chosen small Diamonds, could command a price of two to three thousand pounds.

A fine cushion cut Gem quality Amethyst,
claw set as a solitaire in 18ct Gold and was probably worn as an Engagement Ring
by a woman born in the month of February, whose lover would only settle for the
finest example of Amethyst available on the market at that time and to be so
designed that the culet touches the skin to further enhance his fiancée’s
health and beauty. It would be very difficult, if not impossible, to order such
a quality gemstone today, not being just a question of money but this richness

I have heard of Natural Blue Spinels over the years but I have never owned one. Precious Red Spinels, of which I am very fond, yes, Pretty Pink and Mauve Spinels, yes, low value White Spinels, yes, but Blue, never. So now I have bought one and it’s a beauty! A nice large top surface in a generous type of Emerald cut, with small double claws at each corner, the mount all Platinum and probably made in the 1930’s. How to describe to you the colour of a Natural Blue Spinel? It is not a soft velvety colour like a good sapphire and it is not the mauve/blue of a tanzanite. I suppose when I first saw the stone it struck me as being sharp and bright and puzzling because I did not know what I was looking at. When I say bright, I do not mean light because the stone is darkish but “bright”, like Electric Blue. But what I found intriguing is what I see in the stone under the spotlights. Do you know what a children’s sparkler is? It’s a kind of safe firework you can hold on a stick and it showers out hundreds of little white sparkles. Well, that is what I can see in this Blue Spinel when I move my hand whilst wearing the Ring, except that the sparkles are another shade of Blue. Quite fascinating. English circa 1934

An unusual colour old
Colombian Emerald, set in a later ring mount. This stone is
quite light in colour, fairly translucent, and has a black dot inclusion in one
corner and is cut in a cushion shape which you would not normally expect to find
in an Emerald. In some lights the stone has a bluish tinge and having
shown it at a recent Antique Fair, I had several enquiries as to what was that
strange looking stone, so I withdrew it for testing and Christopher confirms
that it is an Emerald. It is in a Platinum claw bezel and the shank is in Yellow
Gold. The inner band is stamped 18ct& PT. The mount circa 1900, the
Emerald much earlier.

One rarely sees faceted
intense Orange Mexican Fire Opals anymore. They turn up occasionally as
Cabochons in 1980’s Rings with Diamond surrounds or as Cabochons in Silver
mounted Arts and Crafts jewellery circa 1900. The best Fire Opal jewel I ever
owned was a Necklet, which had faceted stones with a few small scattered
Diamonds and was by Liberty & Co. circa 1910. It was purchased by Miss B.B.
a customer of mine and she wears it occasionally and it looks stunning and I
would dearly like to buy it back (with a good profit) Anyway, back
to this Ring. The Fire Opal is a cut cornered faceted rectangle, similar to an
Emerald cut and is a very good colour. The stone has a surround of sixteen
Diamonds, all Platinum set, of which there are three on each shoulder in
triangular settings. The yellow metal shank is unmarked and tests as 18ct Gold.

reasons) The rectangular Jade is a pleasing colour and is centrally set

the reverse of the Jade is set in a skilfully made Platinum framework. On each
shoulder are set six Diamonds in step formation, to a slender shank, which is

A Victorian Gold and Diamond Memorial Ring
with three flat topped Diamonds with narrow faceted edges, the
centre stone being oval and the shoulder stones are Pear shaped almost to the point
of being Triangular. Flat-topped Diamonds, such as these, are called Portrait
Diamonds and as the name suggests, are usually used in conjunction with a
miniature Portrait, the Diamond acting as the “glass”.
I can assure you that they are rare; so do not assume that all Portrait
Rings are covered with a Diamond! In the case of this Ring, behind each Diamond
“window” is beautifully braided hair which represents the three people
remembered within the band. They are as follows: 'John died 3 June 1823 aged 12.
R.C. died 30, June 1864 aged 80 D.C.
died 13, Jan 1870. aged 87'. RC and
DC were probably the parents of John. Memorial Rings of this quality were very
costly in their day and were usually made following the instructions of a will,
to be given to a certain person or persons in memory of the deceased and paid
for by the estate. I cannot see
more than one only being made because of the rarity of Portrait Diamonds, unless
it was a very rich family and expense was no deterrent. This Ring, as well as
being of interest to collectors, can be worn by anyone. I wore it for two days
after buying it last week and had many favorable comments, English 1870

The five brilliant cut Diamonds in Platinum milligrain collets (and weighing approximately 2.50 carats) run 'up the finger', within a graceful open work scalloped border set with 31 Diamonds, also all milligrain edged. There are other delightful features to this ring, which make it quite exceptional. On each shoulder are three small graduating fancy shaped Sapphires and between each brilliant cut Diamond, there is also a fancy shaped Sapphire. A fine creation of the Belle Epoque and the kind of gift that King Edward VII would have given to Lily Langtry. The length of the top is 32mm/1¼" long. English, circa 1895

Not
one but TWO owl rings! I am told that the Countess, who went to Heaven in
1998, adored owls and had dozens of owl items, from lamps, to book ends to
banister finial’s, door handles and car mascots and of course ‘owl
jewellery’. The jewellery was
commissioned from the worlds leading jewellers from ‘B’ through to ‘V’. Apparently the Countess who already had an owl ring (a) that
she wore on her right hand and had been made in Rome, decided that she needed an
owl ring for the little finger of her left hand. Hence the smaller sized owl ring (b) that the Countess had
made in Paris as a copy of ring (a). However
the jeweller in Paris decided to make his own version of the owl.
It is subtle but visible. The
feathers of (b) are all engraved right around the shoulders and shank and the
Gold work is thicker than ring (a). Each
ring is set with 51 Diamonds and cabochon-Emerald eyes. European circa 1965 (a)
and 1966 (b)

A
fine looking Star Sapphire Diamond & Platinum ring of the Art Deco
period. The lively grey/blue Sapphire weighing approximately 8 carats with
a good central six pointed star, each divided shoulder is set with 10
small round Diamonds, between which is a square Diamond of good colour and
clarity. On the reverse of the stone is what appears to be a chip. I
am assured by the lapidary that this is where stone impurity was removed at an
early stage of cutting. The shank is numbered '446' but there is no Platinum mark or
signature which may have been lost by careless sizing. English, circa 1925

Years
ago, I never thought much of this style of ring, called variously a Princess
ring, a Temple ring or a Pagoda ring. They are from the cultures of Thailand,
Burma, Cambodia of which I knew very little. I had never visited those
countries, I assumed that these rings were
made in the thousands and that having had two pass through my hands many years
ago I thought more would turn up. WRONG. Now I have been to Thailand several
times, to Burma and to the Cambodian border. Have I seen these rings for sale,
either in an antique shop, street market or even new copies. NO. But when you
see the tops of temples and the headdress of traditional dancers, then you
realise the inspiration of these designs and appreciate their history and the
culture of old Siam. So back to England, Mrs D has gone to heaven and in a series
of auction sales that have been held to dispose of her large ring collection, I
bought back the two Princess rings that I sold her in the early 1980’s plus
five more that she had acquired. Someone at one of these sales told me that at
certain cocktail parties Mrs D would wear four of these rings on each hand. Wow
! Well one has gone astray because I only bought seven. This particular one on
my website is stuffed full of Diamonds and other gems and is the most costly of
the group. If you wait over the next few months, I will put the others up
gradually. This ring has over two carats of Diamonds and a surround of pear
shaped gemstones that include Ruby, Emerald, Garnet, Sapphire, Moonstone,
Chrysoberyl, Zircon and Yellow Beryl. Thai/Cambodian,

A Victorian Diamond and Sapphire ring. The single rectangular Sapphire, set obliquely in the center with paired old mine Brilliant Cut Diamonds on either side. The Gold mount is in a crossover design that is inspired by an ancient Celtic pattern, which makes it look like it is formed from two rings, one fitting onto the other. This is a scarce model. The inner shank is stamped with the makers mark 'JW' and 18c for 18 carat Gold. English circa 1870

Tiffany & Co made this classic engagement ring in 1900 or there about and it was probably made to order and not 'off the shelf'. The center stone is an old mine Brilliant Cut Diamond of good colour and on either side are two demantoid Garnets of the most startling fresh bright green colour imaginable. The shoulders of the ring are engraved with leaves between milligrain edges and there is further engraving along the bottom of the gallery. The Diamond has its own individual Platinum setting. For such a simple concept as a 3 stone ring, this one stands out for sheer attention to detail and quality of craftsmanship. The inner shank signed Tiffany and Co, American circa 1900
