Probably the most famous ring design ever, was the Panther Ring by Cartier, in Onyx and Diamonds and first produced in the 1920's. This Cartier Panther design is hallmarked for 1970 and is for everyday wear, whereas the earlier design were for evening only. This 18 carat Gold Panther has Emerald eyes and is clasping a Cabochon Sapphire of good colour. The inner shank is stamped and engraved with the following information which authenticates all Cartier pieces; JC the company mark for Jacques Cartier, script signature; 'Cartier London' and full English 750 (18ct) hallmark for 1970 and stock number 7553. English, 1970

A long rectangular Morganite
of a most subtle, soft and flawless Pink imaginable. Subtle, because in some
lights the viewer sees a flash of pink which disappears and makes one wonder if
it was all in the imagination. This pastel Gem is set in a simple mount,
which gives the maximum exposure to the stone and the metal tests as 18 carat
White Gold.

NB What is a Morganite? First discovered in 1901 near San Diego, California, named after J P Morgan, the American banker, the stone is a Beryl and the same mineral as an Aquamarine; they are brothers of a different colour. Fine Morganites were later discovered (in 1909) on the island of Madagascar, which is probably the source of the above Gem.
*I am told that the stone is more than 10 carats in weight.

A
dramatic Ring from the early 1970’s.
A pair of Gold hands hold a large Cabochon Black Haematite (Hematite*),
one of which is wearing an Emerald Ring and both wrists have a pair of White
Gold bracelets. The gold work is substantial and behind the Haematite, is
thickly curved to a waved shank, fully hallmarked for London, 18 carat Gold and
makers mark SG, but the date letter is worn. This is a most interesting
design Ring and probably unique. English

*Haematite is the most important ore of iron oxide, very heavy and hard and has the same crystal structure as sapphire and ruby. It is lustrous, opaque, blue black to silvery in colour and was used by the ancient Egyptians to carve as seal stones and scarabs, but the finest specimens have been found at Cleator Moor in the English Lake District.

A
heavy Gold and Aquamarine Ring, the
rectangular Aquamarine set across the finger within a concave bezel with raised
“shoulders” at either end, giving it a substantial and modern look. There
are two Gold marks stamped on the outer shank, one which may be French and the
precious yellow metal tests as 18 carat Gold.

This
may be a Unique Ring. The flat ring top represents a table and on it is a
piece of cheese modelled as the initial B. A mouse is clinging around the
“table top” and attempting to reach the cheese. All this is created in
unmarked 18 carat Gold and probably dates from the late 1960’s.

An
interesting design Ring, made in Sweden in 1989. It is fully marked 18ct Gold
and is in the form of a fold of textured linen, with embroidered edges and with
an attractive satinised finish. It is mounted at left with a single round
brilliant cut Diamond in an 18ct White Gold collet. The inner shank is stamped
0.10 (which I assume is the weight of the Diamond) and 750 twice with two other
marks and the signature LAPPONIA. Swedish 1989.

I think this Ring was made in the mid
1960’s, so I had better name the era as “ Early Beatles”. The top is set
with a triangular shaped Diamond of good colour and weighing approximately .25ct
and mounted in a similarly shaped yellow Gold setting with two Gold
“louvers” on either side. The shank is a strange shape also, being narrow
then broadening out and narrowing again. The designers then made things even
more difficult for themselves by enameling two shades on the sides of the Ring,
gunmetal and black. The Gold is unmarked and tests as 18ct. This Ring will
make a kooky Engagement Ring and the Wedding Band will fit snugly against the
flat base of the triangle. English

A
strange looking Gold ring by the highly regarded Illias Lalaounis Company who
specialise in revivalist Gold jewellery. I
sometimes see their pieces in auction at Christies and Sotheby’s and they make
quite good prices. The design for
this ring is based, in my opinion, on some Bronze Age artifact It is in 18ct
Gold, has the makers mark and comes in the Lalaounis ring box.

Mrs D bought this ring from the Electrum
Gallery in 1984. She also bought
many rings from me over the years and from many of my
jewellery dealer colleagues. She
has now gone to heaven, and at one of the auction sales that dispersed her large
collection; I was able to buy many of those rings back, plus this one and some
of the Egyptian rings that she collected. These
I will put on my website at a future date.
This ring was designed and made in Paris by Ladvrner in 1984. The outer shank is signed by him and dated 1984 along with
his makers mark ‘GL’ and the French double mark of eagles head and boars
head for Gold and Silver, although the ring is mainly silver with a small amount
of Gold work on the top. The stones
used in this extraordinary design are Amethyst, Pearls and what I think is a
Labradorite and an Opal. French,
