A dark Mauve Spinel Single Stone Ring. This is a curious Gemstone, because in some lights it looks like
the darkest of Amethysts and in other lights, like a large Purple Sapphire. The
mixed cut Spinel is set in an unmarked ring mount, testing as Platinum and was
probably worn at cocktail parties in the 1930’s, as a trophy stone, with
Diamond Eternity Rings above and below. English,
circa 1935

A Green Tourmaline of great beauty, in a simple Platinum
ring mount. This type
of rectangular, cut cornered stone is called “emerald cut” and shows the
colour of the Tourmaline at its best. During this period (the 1920’s) the
Green Tourmalines that came to the London Gem Market, were a soft, rich colour
and I have often had interested enquiries from people who asked if the Green
Stone Rings were Emeralds, which will give you some indication of the appeal of
these stones, whereas the majority of modern green tourmalines have, to my eye,
a hard look and could in no way be mistaken for emeralds. This Ring, which is
stamped PLAT, for Platinum, inside the shank, could have been worn as an
Engagement Ring, which would have been eventually partnered with a narrow
Platinum Wedding Ring or it may have been given to a woman who just liked Green!
English, circa 1925

regularly in his jewellery and objects to such great effect. Here, Tiffany
has made a Ring of great simplicity, the stone is set on a plain oval of Gold
which is signed Tiffany & Co and the narrow shank is stamped 584 for 14
carat Gold. American circa

A rare
bi-coloured Sapphire in Blue and Pink, the
centre of the stone being blue and the outer edges are pink, very noticeable in
electric light. This type of stone is considered by many people to have magical
properties, hence the deliberate design of the ring mount to ensure that the
cullote (the pointed back of the stone) touches the skin thus creating a
powerful talisman for the wearer. The Gold mount is unmarked and tests as 18
carat and I am told that the Sapphire weights approximately 7 carats and was
purchased in Colombo, Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in the 1930’s and the ring mount was
made in Capetown, South Africa during a stopover on the sea journey home.
